AUBURN, Alabama -- Trent Seaborn threw for two touchdowns as the #5 Thompson Warriors upset the #1 Auburn Tigers 34-21 in the Class 7A quarterfinal playoff game at Duck Stadium on Friday night. Michael Dujon added two touchdowns and 75 yards on 13 carries in the win for the Warriors.
Thompson (9-3) took an early 14-0 lead at halftime. The Warriors' defense set the tone early in the game and pretty much closed down Auburn's high-powered offense for much of the game. "Our program was built on games like this," said Warriors head coach Mark Freeman. "Back in the years when we were building the program, they were built on our kids going and winning these kinds of programs. For the first time in a long time, we've been an underdog, and it actually felt pretty good being an underdog."
Seaborn and the Thompson offense scored those two touchdowns in the first half. With 8:53 left in the second quarter, Seaborn found a wide-open Darion Moseley on a 19-yard touchdown pass play, and the Warriors took a 7-0 lead. With 2:46 left in the half, this time, Seaborn found Derick Kimbrough on a 70-yard touchdown pass play, and with the Warrior's defense, they took the 14-0 lead.
Auburn (10-1) came out of halftime and got right back into the game following the Tigers' big offensive line. With 8:13 left in the third quarter, Jackson Kilgore found Joshua Askew on an 11-yard touchdown pass play to cut the Warriors lead to 14-7. On the Tiger's next possession, Thompson defensive back Damonte Tabb picked off a Tigers pass, and the Warrior's offense took over. A few plays later, Thompson scored. With 3:44 left in the third quarter, RJ Evans scored on a 4-yard touchdown run and Thompson took a 21-7 lead.
On the Thompson next possession, Seaborn riped off a 73-yard run down to the Auburn 4 yard line. With 5:42 left in the fourth quarter, Dujon scored on a 2-yard touchdown run and Thompson led 28-7. With 3:32 left in the game, Kilgore scored on a 1-yard touchdown run and the Thompson lead was cut down to 28-14. Thompson came right back with 2:19 left in the game when Dugon scored on a 22-yard touchdown run and Thompson led 34-14. Auburn scored a late touchdown with less than a minute left in the game.
