TRUSSVILLE, Alabama -- The Hewitt-Trussville Huskies get a walk-off RBI hit from Channey Peters to score Zaylen Tucker from first base for the winning run in seven innings at the Goldie Paine Field on Thursday night. The Huskies had to battle back from a 3-1 deficit to get the win in the last inning.
"I saw some fight, and it was a good test for us," said Huskies' head coach Taylor Burt. "That was good to see our team respond." With the game tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Peters ripped a line drive to left field, and the speed of Tucker took over with a head-first dive into home plate for the winning run. "To be honest with you, I kind of blacked out, but I knew it was a walk-off situation," said Huskies infielder Peters. "I could feel it on the on-deck circle, found my pitch, and drove it. I knew with Zaylen running that it was game."
Tucker drew a 3-2 walk and scored with two outs with the hit. "I knew I could get there," said Huskies centerfielder Tucker. "I was just determined I was going to get to home plate. I was waiting for Coach Taylor to give me the go, but if she had given me the stop, I would probably still be going home."
Tuscaloosa County (0-1) scored first in the game on an unearned run, but a Tucker home run to deep right field was a rocket shot. "I was looking for a screwball because that is what we thought we would see on film," added Tucker. "But when I saw that inside screwball, I just let loose. I just turned on it and let loose. This shows we have a lot to work on, but it sets the tone that we can come back in a game like this."
In the top of the second inning, Tuscaloosa County second baseman JoJo Belden ripped a home run to left field, and the Wildcats took a 2-1 lead. In the fourth inning, Beldon took another pitch over the right-center fence for her second solo shot of the night, and the Wildcats led 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Hewitt-Trussville (1-0) outfielder AhKeela Honneycutt hit a two-run home run that scored Olivia Faggard. With the home run, the game was tied at 3-3.
Both starting pitchers came away with gutsy performances. Tuscaloosa County pitcher Karlie Beth Beasley pitched 6.2 innings, giving up four earned runs on five hits with ten strikeouts. Hewitt-Trussville starter Kate Hicks pitched four innings giving up only three hits on two earned runs with five strikeouts. Relief pitcher Tucker pitched 3.0 innings, giving up only one hit with four strikeouts.
