RB #8 Elliott McElwain (Hewitt-Trussville) scores on a 8-yard TD run to close out the Huskies victory vs Spain Park

TRUSSVILLE, Alabama -- #3 Hewitt-Trussville scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to go on to defeat Spain Park in round one of the AHSAA Class 7A state championship playoffs. The Huskies led throughout the game and held off a late charge by the Jaguars to get the first round victory and move on to host Hoover Friday night at Hewitt-Trussville Stadium.

With 3:52 left in the game and Hewitt-Trussville clinging to only a six point lead, the Huskies put together a huge scoring drive. With 1:40 left in the game, Elliott McElwain scored on a 8-yard touchdown run around the right end to seal the victory for the Huskies. "This is a big game for us scoring some good points," said Huskies running back McElwain. "This is just awesome to keep playing football in the next round. Next week, we just need to keep doing what we are doing."

Hewitt-Trussville (11-0) scored first in the game on a 29-yard field goal by Parker Colburn with 9:17 left in the second quarter. With the FG, Hewitt-Trussville led 3-0 early in the second quarter. With 2:27 left until halftime, Paul Tyson connected with Logan Pitts on a 14-yard touchdown play to extend the Huskies lead to 10-0. Early in the third quarter, linebacker Christian Renda recovers a Jaguars fumble to setup the Huskies offense. A few plays later, Tyson scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to give the Huskies a 17-0 lead. A Tyson to McElwain 55-yard pass setup the short TD by Tyson. McElwain ran about 20-yards bouncing off two Jaguars defensive backs and carried the ball to the Jaguars 5-yard line.

With 5:15 left in the third quarter, Spain Park gets on the scoreboard with a 6-yard touchdown run by quarterback Braxton Barker. With the score, Spain Park trailed 17-7 midway through the third quarter. Hewitt-Trussville came right back and scored again on a 31-yard field goal by Colburn and the Huskies led 20-7 late in the third quarter. With 11:10 in the fourth quarter, the Tyson-Pitts connection scored again on a 9-yard touchdown play and the Huskies led 27-7 early in the fourth quarter. "We went over it all week in practice and knew that the corner was going to drop back and I made my cut and the offensive line gave Paul time to throw a dime to me, what a great throw," said Huskies receiver Pitts. "This is huge tonight. We wanted to do this for our school and keep this going."

With 8:09 left in the game, Spain Park scored on a Barker 16-yard run around the right end. With the touchdown, the Jaguars still trailed 27-14. With 3:57 left in the game, D'Arie Johnson scored on a 3-yard touchdown run and the Jaguars were close at 27-21 but still down late in the game. Hewitt-Trussville scored the game clincher on their next possession.

"I was proud of our guys on that last drive to get that touchdown," said Huskies Head coach Josh Floyd. "The offensive line did a great job on that drive. Give Spain Park credit, we knew that it was going to be a physical game and we told our team that all week, but in the end I think our guys were a little more physical."

With the win, Hewitt-Trussville will host Hoover in the quarter-final round of the Class 7A playoffs.
