WETUMPKA, Alabama -- A late Pike Road turnover turned the tide for the Lions as they went on to a significant 41-37 win over Pike Road in a non-region contest on Thursday night. Prattville trailed 17-14 at halftime but outscored Pike Road with four second-half touchdowns to seal the big win.
Prattville (1-0) made many contributions from different players on offense and made its way in the second half. "A lot of resilience; we fought hard tonight," said Lions head coach BJ Wallace. "We were motivated to play hard, and I'm glad we showed up. We had some coordinator changes and had to figure out who we were. This was huge for us starting the season 1-0. We've grown up a little bit, and now it's on to the next game."
Prattville made a couple of big special teams plays during the win, and right from the start, Donavan Brown took the kickoff and raced 65 yards for a touchdown. With 11:47 left in the first quarter, the Lions took the early 7-0 lead. The Lions had the ball deep in their own end zone and snapped the ball over the quarterback's head, and the ball rolled out of the end zone for a Prattville safety. Prattville still led 7-2.
Pike Road took a 10-7 lead with 4:52 left in the second quarter when Mike Jones scored on a 14-yard run, and Elias Holtzclaw scored on the two-point conversion. With 3:38 left in the half, Patrick Carter scored on an 11-yard touchdown run, and the Patriots took a 17-7 lead. Right before halftime, though, Prattville made a pivotal drive to stay close in the game when Tristin Blackmon scored on a 1-yard touchdown run while Prattville led 17-14 going into halftime.
With 5:32 left in the third quarter, Cason Myers scored on a 1-yard touchdown run to give the Patriots a big 24-14 lead midway through the third quarter, but Prattville responded again. With 4:40 left in the third quarter, Gavin Rigdon found Brodie Bowman on a short swing pass and took it in for a Lions touchdown. Pike Road still led 24-21. With 2:31 left in the third quarter, Pike Road struck quickly when Myers hit Omari Smith on a short pass, and he raced 70 yards for a Patriots touchdown. With the score, Pike Road led 31-21, but there was no giving up in the Prattville offense in the second half.
With 1:10 left in the third quarter, a Rigdon pass to Bowman over the middle in the end zone brought Prattville back again but still trailed 31-27 over Pike Road. With 5:58 left in the game, a Kelvin Blue 11-yard touchdown run gave the Lions a 34-31 lead, their first lead since they were leading 7-2. With 1:22 left in the game, Blue ripped off a big touchdown run of 49-yard, and the Lions led 41-31 late in the game. Pike Road scored as time expired on a Myers-to-Smith 11-yard touchdown pass. "I saw a lot of fight, and no one wanted to quit," said Lions QB Rigdon. "Coach has been preaching in the offseason not to quit, just keep playing hard. We were fired up to play this game. I just really connected to my guys to come out here and play for each other."
For Pike Road, Myers completed 15-of-34 passing for 239 yards with three touchdowns and a rushing 1-yard touchdown. Jones had 163 yards and a touchdown. Carter had four tackles, a tackle for loss, and a touchdown run.
