GADSDEN, Alabama -- The Oxford Yellow Jackets used a dominating defense and controlled the ball on offense to go on and defeat Gadsden City 35-6 at Titans Stadium Friday night. The Yellow Jackets scored a touchdown in every quarter to get the win over the Titans.
Oxford (2-0) on defense only surrendered 168 total yards in the game with their stingy defense. "Our defense for the second week in a row is the heart and soul of the team," said Yellow Jackets head coach Ryan Herring. "Offensively we had some penalties that messed up drives and we didn't do some smart things on offense, but we did enough to get by. We have to be more productive on offense. We need some eight to 10 play drives on offense, but the defense really played great tonight."
Oxford started the scoring when Tyetus Smith Lindsey scored on a 4-yard run and the Yellow Jackets took a 7-0 lead with 6:20 left in the first quarter. With :46 seconds until the half, Trey Higgins found Roc Taylor wide open in the end zone for a 27-yard touchdown for Oxford and the Yellow Jackets took a 14-0 halftime lead.
With 8:45 left in the third quarter, Oxford scored for the first time in the second half, when Smith Lindsey scored on a 21-yard run for a Yellow Jackets 21-0 lead. Gadsden City had a short field on offense but was picked off by defensive back Trequon Fegans in the end zone to take away a Titans score. With 7:24 left in the fourth quarter, Jordan Booker raced in for a 15-yard touchdown. With the score, the Yellow Jackets led 28-0.
WIth 2:30 left in the game, Xyon Satcher took a 50-yard fumble recovery and raced in for a Yellow Jackets score. With the touchdown, Oxford left 35-0 late in the game. Gadsden City scored on the last play of the game to make it 35-6 Oxford.
Oxford played four quarters of solid defense and led the beginning and the Oxford defense was not going to let Gadsden City in this game offensively. "We're playing real well on defense, Oxford defense," said Yellow Jackets linebacker Ken McCallum. "We did a good job of flying to the ball and getting all 11 guys to the football. We had a lot of confidence coming into this game but you still have to go out and excute the game play and play the game like we do at Oxford."
For the game, Smith-Lindsey had 111 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns. Jonovan Carlisle had 67 yards on 10 carries and Higgins had 34 yards on 11 carries. Taylor had 50 yards on 5 receptions and X'Zavian Britt had 3 receptions for 33 yards.
