Terrell West led the Cougars offense with 198 rushing yards and three touchdowns to give #2 Clay-Chalkville a 50-22 win over Oak Mountain. With the win, the Clay-Chalkville closes out the regular season with a 9-1 record and looks forward to the 2013 AHSAA playoffs.

Clay-Chalkville (9-1, 6-1 Class 6A Region 7) was very balanced on offense and did a solid job on the defensive side of the ball with the Oak Mountain run game. "Our seniors are 31-3 and they come to play each week," said Cougars Head coach Jerry Hood. "We want to keep building, all the reps we are getting better on defense. Our offensive line is playing pretty well, we have done a good job of rushing the football and keeping the pressure of our quarterback who has been sacked only three times coming into this one. We made some penalties but they were agressive penalties. We have things we need to work on them to get ready for the playoffs."

The Cougars offense scored quickly in the game. On the third play of the game, junior running back West took a hand off up the middle, fanned out to the left of the field and out raced the Eagles defense for the first score on a 59-yard touchdown run. Patrick Millican kicks the extra point for a 7-0 lead. "Great holes, great lanes and great blocks down field by Brian Clark," said Cougars RB West. "We had a great practice this week and really think it set the tone for the game tonight. We wanted to play hard and we want to get better each week."

Oak Mountain (4-6, 3-4 Class 6A Region 4) responded after the Cougars touchdown with a score. Warren Shader hit a wide open Avery Nguyen on a 21-yard touchdown pass. The Eagles use the triple option offense and don't throw the football much and surprised the Cougars secondary. Harold Shader scores on the two point conversion and the Eagles take their only lead of the game at 8-7.

Clay-Chalkville came back to score again when West scored on a 5-yard touchdown run. A Millican extra point gave the Cougars a 14-8 lead.  On the Oak Mountain next possession, the Eagles offense turned the ball over on a fumble and big defensive lineman Jordan Sharbutt came up with the turnover for the Cougars. Clay-Chalkville scored off the turnover on a Christopher Marshall 2-yard touchdown run and give the Cougars a 21-8 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Oak Mountain closed the gap again on a Galen Loyd scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. A Blake Miller extra point made it 21-15 Clay-Chalkville, but the Eagles turned the momentum. But right after the Eagles score, T.J. Simmons took the kickoff and raced 82-yards for a big Clay-Chalkville touchdown and a backbreaker for the Oak Mountain. "We gave up a big touchdown return," said Eagles Head coach Chris Bell. "I didn't think we played hard. We made to many mistakes and turned the balll over and you can't do playing a good football team."

Oak Mountain had an opportunity to score again but missed on a 38-yard field goal with 7:30 left in the half. Clay-Chalkville missed on their opportunty before the half on a dropped ball in the end zone on fourth down. "We have a chance to score before half and we don't," added Hood. "We didn't do that, we dropped the ball. Great protection, great throw by Hayden (Moore), but we didn't convert. Those things can get you beat in the playoffs so we still have a lot of work to do."

In the second half, it was the Cougars offense to continue to shine along with the defense who created some key turnovers. On the Eagles first possession of the second half, Oak Mountain fumbles again and Terry Brown is on the spot for the recovery. A couple of plays later, Eric Blockum took a bubble screen and raced 19-yards for the touchdown from quarterback Hayden Moore. Moore completed 13-of-20 passing for 166 yards and over 40 yards rushing the football. "It's all about good momentum coming into the playoffs," said the Cougars QB Moore. "We came out and did what we wanted to do and we need to get ready for next week. Offensive line played well and made some big holes for our running backs and were looking forward to improve each week."

With 10:17 left in the third quarter, Oak Mountain scored their last touchdown. The Eagles QB Shader scored on a 5-yard touchdown run. Miller kicked the PAT to cut the Cougars lead to 35-22. Oak Mountain did a solid job on defense in the third quarter, but the Eagles offense turned the ball over again in the third and Clay-Chalkville took advantage of it. With 2:13 left in the quarter, West scored on a 2-yard run. The Cougars decided to go for the two point conversion and Moore threw to Terrell Simmons for the score. Clay-Chalkville now up 43-22.

The Cougars scored their last touchdown on a 85-yard sprint by West with 3:46 in the game. The Cougars finished the game with 462 total yards. Oak Mountain was held to 248 yards but they had three costly fumbles that led to three Clay-Chalkville touchdowns.
