MONTGOMERY, Alabama -- Jeff Davis scored 23 straight points in the first half as they go to defeat Carver-Montgomery 23-12 Thursday night at the Cramton Bowl. It was a tail of two halves as Jeff Davis scored all their points in the first half while Carver scored their points all in the second half.
Jeff Davis (1-1) came out strong to start the game, but didn't get a first down in the second half with 2:45 left in the third quarter and only had one more first down in the final quarter. "We were up 23-0 but we just have to fight to the end," said Volunteers Head coach Lee Carter. "No excuses. We just played 24 minutes of good football. We didn't make adjustments on offense or defense in the second half like we should have made and that is on us as coaches. We had to do a better job of that."
Carver (0-2) had to start the game with backup quarterback Kole Williams and the Wolverines offense had its issues in the first quarter. "Our starting quarterback couldn't go tonight," said Wolverines Head coach Willie Spears. "We had to go to our backup guy but the whole offense came together in the second half, but nine turnovers in two games is not good and will not get us a win if we keep turning the ball over." Starting quarterback Willie Smith should be back next week against Opelika.
Jeff Davis scored first when Carver fumbled the ball around the left end and Kendarius Vandiver scopped it up and ran 49-yards for a Volunteer touchdown and Jeff Davis led 7-0 with 9:27 left in the first quarter.
The Jeff Davis offense scored next as quarterback Jaquan Williams hit Tavares Womack on a 29-yard touchdown pass over the middle of Carver defense and the Volunteers led 14-0 with 1:08 left in the first quarter. "We have a great offensive line that played really well for us tonight," said Volunteers quarterback Williams. "Our defense fought to the end and did a great job. We need to play a little smarter at times, but we have work to do and we will be improving to get better but this was a great team effort for the win."
Jeff Davis came back to score again with 2:52 left in the half when Williams ran in the end zone on a quarterback sneak from 1-yard out. Jeff Davis led 20-0. With a quick takeaway from the Jeff Davis defense, the Volunteers scored again on a Juan Ocana 34-yard field goal with 1:24 left in the half and Jeff Davis took a 23-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Carver made some adjustments that really paid off with a few scores. Carver scored on their first possession of the second half as Jerquanmeian Howard scored on a 33-yard touchdown run and Carver cut the Jeff Davis lead to 23-6 with 9:10 left in the third quarter. After and quich three and out by the Carver defense, the Wolverines came right back to score again on a Kole Williams to Howard on a 4-yard touchdown pass. With the score, Jeff Davis led 23-12.
Both teams had chances to score in the forth quarter, but both defenses did a solid job of keeping the offenses out of the end zones. Jeff Davis missed a 38-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and Carver was stopped twice on fourth down in the fourth quarter to keep them out of the end zone.
Anthony Scott, Quenterious Jones, Isaiah Forte and Ja'Torrian Fuller-Jones played well for Carver on defense in the second half keeping Jeff Davis out of the end zone in the second half. Kendarius, D'Quavius Beverly, Brandon Mack played well for Jeff Davis on defense keeping Carver out of the end zone in the first half.
