TRUSSVILLE, Alabama -- With only :24 seconds left in the game, quarterback Connor Adair lofted a pass to running back Grayson Cash for an 18-yard touchdown in the back corner of the end zone and Hewitt-Trussville goes on to win the Class 7A, Region 4 Championship Friday night on Husky Field at Hewitt-Trussville Stadium. James Clemens led for all but the :24 seconds of the second half, but let their title shot slip away in a hard fought game.
With James Clemens driving deep inside Husky territory late in the game, defensive back Trevor Sisk picked off a Jets pass in the end zone that gave the Huskies offense the ball back with less than two minutes left in the game and only one timeout. If the James Clemens scores on that drive, the Jets would have come away with the win, but Sisk took back the momentum for the Huskies. "When we saw number six in the slot, we were going to double team him," said Huskies DB Sisk. "He ran a corner route and I saw the ball in the air and went up to catch it. I knew I had to make a play for our team if the opportunity arised. to get the offense the ball." This was a huge momentum swing in the game.
"We found a way to win and that is why we are region champs," said Huskies running back Cash. "The defensive back had inside leverage and it was a corner route so I knew I could go outside. I saw the ball in the air and made the play. I just zoned in when I saw the ball. Connor made some great throws on the night, but that one was his best."
With the win, the Huskies get their first region title since 2008. "Great ball game by two great teams. They had play makers and their defense shut us down," said Huskies Head coach Josh Floyd. "At the end of the day, we made enough plays to win the game. The defense was great the whole game, but what a great catch by Cash. Unbelievable."
Hewitt-Trussville started the scoring when Adair threw to Logan Pitts on a 5-yard touchdown pass that gave the Huskies a 7-0 lead with 3:33 left in the first quarter. With 11:30 left in the second quarter, Austin McGhee scored on a 1-yard run to give the Jets a 7-6 lead. McGhee had a 57-yard run to setup the TD for the Jets.
