 FINAL: Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 35, Hueytown 6 | Friday - September 15, 2023 | Class 6A, Region 4 Game

RB #7 Jay Brown scores on a 3-yard touchdown run against Hueytown on Friday night.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- The #4 Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa Patriots rolled to a 35-6 win over Hueytown in a Class 6A, Region 4 matchup on Friday night. The Patriots scored touchdowns on the first four times they had the football and dominated the first half of the game.

Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa (4-0, 2-0) scored first when they had the football. With 8:20 left in the first quarter, Jayshon Land scored on a 1-yard touchdown run for the Patriots and led 8-0 after the two-point conversion. Land scored his first touchdown of the season after an injury in the first quarter of the first game in Mississippi. Ole Miss verbal commitment Travaris Banks took a pitch to the left side and ran down to the 1-yard line to set up the game's first touchdown.

"We couldn't be happier right now, the best football game that we have played against the best football team that we have played," said Patriots head coach Jamie Mitchell. "Really, really pleased with the way we performed. So many guys that made plays. We are going to enjoy this win. Our defense continues to do incredible things. They just keep giving you more opportunities on offense when you get so many three-and-outs. Defensively these guys are elite. Our guys up front have made a big difference on this team. We have seven guys up front, and that is where it starts."

With 2:22 left in the first quarter, Jay Brown scored on a 3-yard touchdown run as the Patriots scored again and led 15-0 late in the first quarter. After a bad Hueytown special play that resulted in the Patriots getting the ball at the Golden Gophers' 12-yard line on the next play, quarterback Bryson Kimbrough ran the ball into the end zone with a 12-yard touchdown run, and Hillcrest had an early 21-0 lead early in the second quarter.

With the Patriots having the ball on their fourth drive of the first half, Hillcrest scored again on a Kimrbough to Decorrion Thomas 52-yard touchdown pass that was a thing of beauty as Thomas waved in and out of the Hueytown defense. With the score, Hillcrest took a 29-0 lead and dominated the first part of the game. Jackson Henderson made the two-point conversion. "It showed that we have great sparks on offense," said Patriots QB Kimbrough. "I don't think we have played our best game yet. There are things we need to clean up, but this gives us confidence and pride in what we do because it shows on the scoreboard."

Both defenses settled in the second quarter, and Hillcrest took the 29-0 lead into halftime.

Midway through the third quarter, Hillcrest put another drive together. A big Henderson reception gave the Patriots a first down inside Hueytown territory, and then a Jamarucs Prince reception took the ball down inside the 30-yard line. With 1:55 left in the third quarter, Kimbrough found Decorrion Thomas on a 12-yard touchdown pass play, putting the Patriots up 35-0 late in the third quarter.

With 5:41 left in the game, Jabron Ellington threw deep to TJ Howell for a 19-yard touchdown pass play for the Gophers but still trailed in the game by a 35-6 margin.

Next, Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa will travel to Brookwood, while Hueytown will host Bessemer City in region games.
