TRUSSVILLE, Alabama -- Wide receiver Kolby Hearn scored three touchdowns as #2 Thompson defeated #5 Hewitt-Trussville 40-14 at Hewitt-Trussville Stadium on Friday night. Thompson scored early and often while rolling up over 440 total yards for the big Class 7A, Region 3 win.

Thompson (5-1, 4-0) is coming off the 36-33 loss to Clay-Chalkville last week and was very eager to get back on the field and prove they are still the top dog in the region. "We had a great week of practice, and people doubted us, and rightly so," said Warriors head coach Mark Freeman. "We have to get better, and we came out with some good energy. We are better this week than we were last week. I think our defense played better, and they were challenged this week. We played a great team last week. We have to play better on defense. They are a good football team, and we played well tonight."

Thompson scored on their first two drives of the game. With 5:44 left in the first quarter, AJ Green scored on a one-yard touchdown run, and the Warriors led 7-0. With 2:40 left in the first quarter, Michael Dujon moved the pile of defenders right into the end zone for a 6-yard touchdown run. With the score, Thompson led 14-0. 

Hewitt-Trussville (5-2, 3-1) came back on a much-needed score, and with 8:25 left in the second quarter, Peyton Floyd scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. With the score, the Warriors lead was cut to 14-7. On the first play after the Huskies touchdown, Trent Seaborn found Hearn, and he raced 80 yards for a Warriors touchdown. With the score, Thompson led 21-7 with 8:10 left in the second quarter. 

With 5:16 left in the half, John McGuire kicked a 47-yard field goal, and the Warriors led 24-7. The Huskies raced down the field, but on the Warriors 1-yard line, the Huskies fumbled, and Kaleb Harris recovered the ball to snuff out a Hewitt-Trussville scoring opportunity right before halftime.

With 6:47 left in the third quarter, McGuire hit his second field goal of the night on a 49-yard kick. With the score, Thompson let 27-7. McGuire missed on a long field goal against Clay-Chalkville that could have sent the game into overtime as time expired last week, but he was on point with all his kicks tonight. "Last week after I missed the kick, I thought about it for like 24 hours, then flushed it, then went back to practice and moved on," said Warriors kicker McGuire. "I wanted to redeem myself."

Hewitt-Trussville closed the gap again as Floyd threw to Jaqson Melton out of the backfield for a 5-yard touchdown pass play. With the score, the Huskies trimmed the lead to 27-14, but that was it for the Huskies offense.

With 11:48 left in the fourth quarter, Seaborn found Hearn on a short pass, but Hearn broke a tackle and raced into the end zone. With the score, Thompson led 33-14. "I broke the guy, it felt good to make that play," said Warriors WR Hearn. "We have been working hard in practice and have a great connection."

With less than five minutes left in the game, Hearn caught a 26-yard touchdown pass in the end zone for the final score of the game. "We executed pretty well tonight," said Warriors QB Seaborn. "Coming into this week, we had to stay focused, and Coach Freeman emphasized that we needed to pay attention to detail. We had great practices every day, and it showed tonight. With all the receivers, we are just putting in some good work, and we have been executing the play that Coach Freeman puts in"

Seaborn finished the game completing 23-of-30 passing for 358 yards and three touchdowns. Hearn had five receptions for 182 yards and three touchdowns. The Thompson offensive line has been an unknown when the season started along with a starter who was injured last week knew thay they would have to play big against Hewitt-Trussville and they did for most of the night.

Offensive lineman Matthew Speights, Barron Criddle, Dylan Marquess, Kingsley Walters, and Brett Barber. "We are playing a guy that we didn't plan on playing and he got better tonight," added Freeman. "That is what football is. We have the next man up. Football is about having everybody ready to play. We did a great job of that this week and proud of our coaches." AJ Green had 76 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown to lead the Warriors ground game.

Next Thompson will travel to Heardmont Park to face Oak Mountain while Hewitt-Trussville will travel to Vestavia Hills.
