 Hoover 27, Thompson 26 Final | Friday - October 18, 2024 | Class 7A, Region 3 Game

WR #4 Jonah Winson (Hoover) scored the game-tying touchdown in overtime

ALABASTER, Alabama -- A Jonah Winston touchdown run and a Matthew Daibes extra point gave the Hoover Bucs a 27-26 overtime win over the Thompson Warriors at Warrior Stadium on Friday night. With the Bucs win, Hoover claims the Class 7A Region 3 title and gets the number one seed in the region.

Thompson took a 26-20 lead as they scored on their first possession of overtime, but the extra point was blocked, opening the door for the Hoover win. The Bucs touchdown and extra point gave Hoover the one-point win in overtime. "That play has been their all game," said Bucs WR Winston. "I told our boys that I have them. When the offense struggled, the defense picked us up; when the defense struggled, the offense picked it up. I saw the hole and walked in."

Hoover (7-2, 6-0) scored first in the game and marched right down the field on their first possession. With 6:02 left in the first quarter, Jabari Mosley scored on a 5-yard touchdown run, and Hoover led 7-0. The Hoover defense held Thompson on a fourth-down play, and the Bucs offense took over again. With 8:04 left in the second quarter, Daibes kicked a 42-yard field goal, and Hoover led 10-0.

Thompson got the first turnover in the game when Hoover fumbled after a Thompson punt, and the Warrior's offense was in good field position to start their drive. With 5:56 left in the second quarter, John McGuire kicked a 38-yard field goal, but Hoover still led 10-3. With less than two minutes to go till halftime, Thompson started a drive at their own 15-yard line. The Warriors go 85 yards on 8 plays as Michael Dujon scored on a 5-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 10-10 with only 18 seconds left in the first half.

With 5:47 left in the third quarter, on a fourth and two play, the Bucs scored again to take the lead. Winston raced around the left end of the Thompson defense for a 30-yard touchdown run, and Hoover led 17-10. Thompson came right back on their next possession, and Trent Seaborn scored on a 1-yard touchdown run, and the game was tied at 17-17. A big Darion Moseley reception set up the Warrior's touchdown.

With Hoover driving, defensive back Terry Robinson picked off a Bucs pass around midfield to give the ball back to Thompson. Late in the third quarter, McGuire hit a 50-yard field goal and it gave Thompson the 20-17 lead. It was the Warriors first lead of the game. Hoover came right back though and a Mac Beason pass to Chris Warren put the ball deep in Warrior territory late in the game. With 3:19 left in the game, Daibes kicked a 28-yard field goal to tie the game at 20-20.

Before overtime, Hoover had the ball and was intercepted by Anquon Fegans, but Thompson ran out of time. As time expired, they threw a deep pass to Fegans in the end zone to force overtime.
