PHENIX CITY, Ala. — Central-Phenix City wasted little time establishing control Thursday night, rolling to a 49-0 victory over JAG at Garrett-Harrison Stadium to open Class 6A Region 2 play. The Red Devils improved to 2-1, 1-0 in region play after an opening-week 41-14 loss to Thompson and a 54-3 win at Pell City. JAG dropped to 0-2. Central led 35-0 at halftime and emptied the bench in the second half of a game that never was in doubt.
Georgia State commit Bobby Coleman, a three-star quarterback who threw for more than 3,000 yards and 33 touchdowns last season, carved up a JAG defense that went 0-7 in region play in 2025. Coleman threw three first-half touchdown passes.
Central didn't take long to score, as the touchdown came on special teams. With 9:18 left in the first quarter, Braden Brown took a punt and raced 60 yards for a Red Devils touchdown. Central took the early 7-0 lead. With 3:17 left in the first quarter, BJ Coleman connected with Braylen Averett on a 38-yard touchdown pass play. Central took a 14-0 lead.
Averett, one of the top sophomores in the state and a 2029 prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Colorado, and Florida, nearly reached 1,000 receiving yards as a freshman (939 yards and multiple touchdowns).
With 10:23 left in the second quarter, Jayshaun Woodhouse took a handoff and ran behind the right side of the line, but the defense forced Woodhouse into another direction, and as he reversed the field, he ran 64 yards for a Red Devils touchdown. Central led 21-0.
Central kept the pressure on late in the second quarter. With 5:35 left in the first half, Coleman found Mike Bass on the left corner of the end zone and the Red Devils led 28-0. With 1:38 left in the first half, the Coleman-Bass combo struck again in the middle of the field for a four-yard touchdown. The Red Devils led 35-0 at halftime.
With 6:07 left in the third quarter, Zion Mabry scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. The Red Devils led 42-0. The final touchdown came with no time left in the third quarter when backup quarterback Jamaurie Jasper connected with Jarwarski Pollock with a 6-yard touchdown pass play, and the Red Devils led 49-0.
The result was Central’s fourth consecutive win in the series against JAG (formerly tied to Jeff Davis). The Red Devils beat the Jaguars 62-6 last October and 52-14 in 2024, both at home. Thursday’s shutout continued a lopsided recent history between the programs. The win also gave first-year head coach Cody Flournoy his first winning record at Central. Flournoy took over after Patrick Nix stepped down following an 11-2 season that ended in a 35-34 Class 7A semifinal loss to Thompson. Flournoy arrived from Jackson, where he won back-to-back Class 4A state titles. He previously served on a Central staff and is a Smiths Station graduate.
