BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Carver-Birmingham used two fourth quarter touchdowns to comeback and win over Chelsea 28-24 in a Class 6A Region 5 game tonight at Carver High School. Down 24-13 with just 11 minutes to go in the game, the Rams defense stepped up big closing down the Hornets offense and getting the ball back three straight times in the fourth quarter to get the comeback win and while running out the clock in the end.

Carver-Birmingham (2-0, 1-0) has wins over Fairfield and now Chelsea in region play. "We were able to come a long way from the first day of practice," said Rams head coach Roderick Carson. "We were down and now we know how to come back from behind. I like the way we fought the whole time. We only have 38 guys and we fought hard to the end. I just love our guys."

Chelsea (0-3, 0-1) scored first in the game when Vick Lindsey scored on a 10-yard touchdown run for the Hornets. With the Chelsea touchdown, the Hornets led 7-0 with 6:55 left in the first quarter. With 4:54 left in the first quarter, Matthew Young hit Marcus Davis on a little screen pass and with a broken tackle, the wide receiver raced 60-yards for the Rams touchdown. The two point conversion failed and Chelsea led 7-6.

As time expired in the first half, kicker Cooper Neal connected on a 23-yard field goal to give Chelsea the 10-6 halftime lead. Both defenses played well in the first half, but the offenses caught fire in the second half especially Carver as they scored 22 second half points while holding Chelsea to just 14 second half points. "We stuck together as a team," said linebacker KenJarius Jelks. "We were down but we came back and didn't put our heads down. We just kept fighting to the end. Coach preached about this game all week and we went out and won the game for him. I love our coach."

With 8:08 left in the third quarter, Carver took the lead back on a Young 2-yard touchdown run and the Rams led 13-10 midway through the third quarter. With 3:33 left in the third quarter, Chelsea took the lead right back on a Collier Blair 9-yard touchdown run and the Hornets led 17-13.

With 11:12 left in the fourth quarter, Turner Griffin scored on a 1-yard touchdown run and the Hornets took a 24-13 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Rams comeback started when Young threw to Deatrius Williams on a 15-yard touchdown play and with a Young two point conversion the Rams cut the Hornets lead to 24-21 with 7:55 left in the game. The winning touchdown came with 5:20 left in the game when Young scored on a 2-yard touchdown run up the middle and Carver took the 28-24 lead. "We played as a team even though we started out slow in the first half," said Rams QB Young. "We had to keep pushing. Getting our first region win was big and that puts us on top of the region standings."

Chelsea wasn't finished though as they marched down the field and on a fourth down play Griffin hit Blair on a fourth down play to keep the drive alive but a few plays later the Hornets pass was picked off by defensive back Collier Blair with only two minutes in the game and no Chelsea time outs. A few plays later, the Rams ran out the clock to get the big region win. "I just made a break on the ball," said Rams DB Blair. "I caught the ball and was looking for one more block on the return but I just had to make the play for my team."

For the final stat line for both teams, Young completed 12-of-18 passing for 192 yards and a touchdown with 92 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns for the Rams. For Chelsea, Lindsey had 81 yards on 11 carries and a touchdown while Blair had 42 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.
